Abstract
This study investigated biased message processing of political satire in The Colbert Report and the influence of political ideology on perceptions of Stephen Colbert. Results indicate that political ideology influences biased processing of ambiguous political messages and source in late-night comedy. Using data from an experiment (N = 332), we found that individual-level political ideology significantly predicted perceptions of Colbert's political ideology. Additionally, there was no significant difference between the groups in thinking Colbert was funny, but conservatives were more likely to report that Colbert only pretends to be joking and genuinely meant what he said while liberals were more likely to report that Colbert used satire and was not serious when offering political statements. Conservatism also significantly predicted perceptions that Colbert disliked liberalism. Finally, a post hoc analysis revealed that perceptions of Colbert's political opinions fully mediated the relationship between political ideology and individual-level opinion.

I can't believe Colbert already has a study of him. Too funny that you bring this up. My friends, who are very conservative, swear that Colbert is a republican. My husband and I watch his show and enjoy it because it's pretty obvious that Colbert is NOT republican. Some of the interviews are downright painful for those who are unaware.
This is the thing - after watching Colbert at Bush's dinner, I don't see how anyone can see that it's not satire.
Hey, I like making fun of liberals too, but there are points I agree with. I also agree that there are pompous conservative idiots that silence dissent and are every bit as bad as liberals. Those are the conservatives Colbert is making fun of, and someone needs to. I hate people who think they know it all and anyone who disagrees is an idiot. If I do that, it's always in jest. Always.
By the way, the way Colbert ripped into Bush was genius. "Here's a man who believes the same thing Wednesday that he did on Monday, no matter WHAT happened Tuesday." Brilliant. God I hated Bush.
Anyways, I'll have to give those articles a read. Maybe a lot of conservatives don't get it when people are making fun of them.
Urgh. You have to be a member to read it.
